Dichterliebe

A Poet's Love expressed through works by Robert Schumann, Dmitri Shostakovich and Johannes Brahms

Time & Location

30 Nov 2025, 19:00 – 21:00

London, Burgh House, New End Square, London NW3 1LT, UK

About the event

Our concert is named after Schumann's epic song cycle "Dichterliebe," excerpts of which will also be performed in a version for viola and piano. The viola being closest to the human voice, its velvety tone perfectly reflects the content.

We will stay in the realm of poetry performing the viola sonata in F minor, op. 120 No. 1 by Johannes Brahms, Schumann's great contemporary, originally composed for clarinet but later arranged for viola by the composer himself in 1895, when he was nearing the end of his life.

And last but not least, Dmitri Shostakovich will have his say with his sonata for viola and piano, op. 147, with its great tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven, Shostakovich's last work; he died just five weeks after its completion.
